Anaerobic seal
Using an anaerobic sealant is crucial when sealing machined metal surfaces like timing covers, especially in modern engines such as the TSI. Unlike traditional gaskets, anaerobic sealants cure in the absence of air and in the presence of metal, forming a strong, leak-proof bond that fills microscopic imperfections between mating surfaces. This ensures a precise and durable seal that can withstand high temperatures, pressure, and oil exposure—conditions typical in the timing chain area. Relying solely on a gasket may not provide the same level of sealing performance, especially if the surfaces are not perfectly flat. By using an anaerobic sealant, you reduce the risk of oil leaks, maintain proper engine lubrication, and ensure long-term reliability.
